This tall graceful plant is found throughout Ireland growing in dry-stone walls, beside rivers, canals and in meadows.  It is happy in both damp and dry soil conditions but grows to a greater height (up to 2m) in damp places.  They come in white & red varieties, the red being more common in the wild. Starting out as a strong brick red colour, the flowers fade to pale pink through the season and are borne in dense, rounded clusters on thick, erect stems, blooming from June to September.

Valerian meaning and symbolism in the language of flowers: Symbolic of strength. The name comes from the Latin word valere, meaning 'to be strong'. The extract of Valerian root is also used as a gentle, natural sleep aid in herbalism, making this a great piece to hang in the bedroom.
